<die digitale dusseldorf> will take place in 2021 for the sixth time. The international festival will present the latest developments and trends in the digitization of art, design and music in concerts, exhibitions, performances and lectures. This year we will focus on „Digital Jokes“.
Humor in the visual arts is not necessarily appreciated - both by artists and art viewers. Artists like Francisco de Goya, Honoré Daumier and Jean Tingeluy or art movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism, which fundamentally worked with humor and irony, are, on the whole, quite exceptions in art history. Or to put it another way: a certain tension between humor and art can be detected.
A similar tension arises in the relationship between humor and technology: the machine is a profoundly serious thing in itself, but we can interact with it in a thoroughly humorous way. Moreover, we see that in our technologised world, the discrepancies between technology's claim to perfection on the one hand and actual practice on the other - malfunctions, useless artificial intelligence or helpless robots - are an inexhaustible source of irony and parody.
Many digital artists all over the world are dedicated to an intensive treatment of these phenomena in our culture. It now seems interesting to us to investigate these tensions between technology, art and humor in digital art and culture. We would like to show which humorous techniques digital artists use to create attention for their work as well as for the topics they deal with. Furthermore, we would like to explore which new creative and humorous ways the internet has created in communication.
So what does art do with technology and humor? < die digitale dusseldorf >will seek stimulating answers to this question with exhibitions, concerts, performances, lectures and talks.
>>> You are a digital artist? Then take part with your work in the big group exhibition at the Weltkunstzimmer, Düsseldorf, Germany, 22 October - 7 November 2021
